It starts off with 'eat well and drink well...' but I can't understand the last bit . I think it's in German dialect, Schwaebisch or Bayerisch maybe, or Swiss German

I believe that the plate was made somewhere in the Alps, because of the Edelweiss-decor. So I guess you are right, orangefrog- an Austro-Bavarian or Swiss German dialect.

The Germans call these plates Spruchteller.

Interesting piece, slip ware, possibly from Konstanz ?
I think its alemannic dialect, spoken mainly South West Germany (Baden) and at Basel (Swiss German)
I can´t translate it either , not completely ,
Good eating and good drinking that ---- i guess --- keeps "üs" (us)
healthy I will ask at friend at Züri (Zürich)

Alemannic ? Yes, it is,

Starndard (written) German "K" = alemannic "Ch"
e.g. Kind = Chind = englisch Child
können = chönne = engl. can
e.g. ich kann = i cha = engl. i can
thus
"Das chönts üs" = that could us

but "en Finte" ???? still no idea, difficult, didn´t find it in the German \ alemannic dictionary

If we put together vhb64's two possible translations;
Good eating and good drinking that ---- i guess --- keeps "üs" (us)
and
"Das chönts üs" = that could us
then it could be something along the lines of eat well and drink well so that we may stay....(healthy?) or, if the 'ne' relates to a negative, eat well and drink well so we will not....(ail?).
All in all, it is probably one of those local sayings, much as you see on Torquay motto ware, and looks likely be about the importance or benefit of good food and wine.
Please be aware that this is purely guesswork based on vhb64's help; to be honest I haven't really got a clue Shrugs but as the saying goes, "Every little helps" Cheeky

It's a pleasure Alan, you can't beat a good mystery to bring out the Sherlock in me, and it's plain that the real experts here (as opposed to the likes of me; I mostly get by with guesswork and luck) enjoy it too.

Oh, and my wife comes from Ashington, just 16 miles north of you; my life'd be German or Swiss slipware mottoware Spruchteller plate 80963 if I didn't at least try to help one of her compatriots.
