Drip Ware Vase in art deco style - marked Samford Ware to base

Is Samford Ware a range by a compnay or company itself? Not got any good pottery mark books at moment so any information welcomed.

It was made by the company Samuel Ford & Co. and the mark is the one used from around 1936 until 1939 when they closed. The pottery was in Burslem.

almost looks like they nicked a Myott mould and a Shelley glaze technique. Stil, I guess imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Hi

Thanks for info

I used to collect dripware - Shelley is the most sophisticted while Empire Ware is always dated on base - Very 30s!

I was looking at that and think it may well have had a lid - wether it was metal or pottery I don't know

It could have had an earthenware top with holes in it to aid flower arranging but, as the company was only a small operation, it is perhaps more likely that the ledge was for a metal or wire arrangement with holes for the same purpose.

A lid or possibly a 'frog'.

PP is right that these pottery items with holes in are called "frogs" and it is rather frightening that there was a publication and now a web site dedicated to the collection of such things - The Pottery Frog Gazette!

Good grief! That probably explains why the clear glass frog that I put on fleabay with a 99p start sold for £7.55. I thought I was pushing it at 99p Shrugs
