Re: Anyone tell me what these chinese marks mean !
I have one quite a lot like it.
Again the quality is very good, I would say mine dates to the 30's (guess).

I would have thought yours to be older, but only by 10-15 years or so, again just a guess as such.

Re: Anyone tell me what these chinese marks mean !
I think I'd date them the other way round; Potty's piece around 1900-1910, Marks vase a little later, but that's also pretty much guesswork. I've looked at one of my books covering Chinese marks up to 1916 and Mark's isn't there, so it's likely later than that.

Re: Anyone tell me what these chinese marks mean !
Is my mark in there Potty P?
Would also been interested to know the name of the book please, I don't have any just on chinese marks yet.
Thanks,
Potty.

Re: Anyone tell me what these chinese marks mean !
It's a 1970 copy of 'A Dictionary of Marks; Ceramics, Metal work, Furniture', edited by Margaret Macdonald-Taylor. It has a small section on Chinese Reign Marks from 1368-1916. Yours isn't there either, but it's only showing marks in Chinese characters. I've got another, more detailed book in the loft, and I'm going up later so I'll see if I can dig it out.
I like the inverted 'A' on the back of yours; it makes me think that it was made specifically for the export market and the person doing the marks wasn't familiar with western lettering. It actually looks a lot like an old Bretby jardinierre I used to own, very similar colouring and style but the Bretby decoration was thin slip whereas yours is in high relief.
Two very nice pots there, shame about the damage on Marks; it could use a collar to disguise it.

Re: Anyone tell me what these chinese marks mean !
Thanks Potty P.
They are nice, I'm always surprised how fine the potting is on mine, the decoration is quite thick high relief, where as the pot itself has very fine walls.
I imagine not a lot of people’s cup of tea at the moment though.

Re: Anyone tell me what these chinese marks mean !
'Tis mine though Potty, I've always had a love of that whole aesthetic movement ware. The only reason I got rid of the Bretby was because somebody offered me really silly money for it which amounted to something like a 3000% gain on what I'd paid.Potty wrote:Thanks Potty P.

I'll let you know later if I find the book in the loft. There's only about a thousand or so up there so shouldn't take long! I knew I should have boxed them in alphabetical order rather than just filling boxes, and not even labelling them was just plain lazy.

1000 books in the loft?
I'm amazed the loft has not caved in
I'm often glad other people don't rate things as I do, means I usually get what I consider a bargain

Keramark is Alan not Mark, which is good because I got muddled up with the Mark / marks references in this thread

Hi, your marks appear to be Wang Bing Rong Zuo or translated means created (made) by Wang Bing Rong.
I am not sure it is his because things are often copied in China!
Date probably early to mid 20th century.

Re: Anyone tell me what these chinese marks mean !
Whoops, and I knew it too, we were chatting the other night on here. Sorry Alan; I think it's because I associate you with the N.East where my wife comes from, and she has a nephew there named....Mark. A bit convoluted maybe, but better than admitting to a 'senior' moment I suppose.skay wrote:Keramark is Alan not Mark, which is good because I got muddled up with the Mark / marks references in this thread

Yes sorry should have made myself clear.
Re: Anyone tell me what these chinese marks mean !
I think it was me confused things with all that 'Mark's mark' malarky!
Out of interest, is the mark the right way round in the pic?

Not at this moment, it is in the same style! But seems a little cruder (sorry) also the inverted A suggests a copy by someone not quite as good as him. If you Google his name and view the images you will see alot with almost the same design. ' A stork and lilies'.
I will take another look and see what I can come up with.

Not quite the mark wants to be rotated 90 degrees clockwise

Potty Primate - it was my pleasure
Potty's 'ginger jar is similar to this one so may have been made by the same potter or someone close enough to copy his wares. Not necessarily a copy or fake sorry Potty

Re: Anyone tell me what these chinese marks mean !
You wont offend me giving an opinion of one of my pots Terry
I like straight to the point talking about pots
It does looks very much like the ginger jar you listed (seems as crude ), base also.
I had wondered if mine was a ginger jar with the lid missing, but to be honest it has no signs at all that it would have been, other than the shape, usually it's quite obvious.

Re: Anyone tell me what these chinese marks mean !
To be honest Potty, I prefer yours to the ginger jar. It might just be the pics, but your colours look more muted, especially the yellow ground which has a much 'warmer' look.
What size is it?
Alan, I think I learn something just about every time I come on here.

Re: Anyone tell me what these chinese marks mean !
It's 4 3/4" high, so not very big really. I imagine Alan's is a fair bit bigger ( ).
