I am sure this was thrown on a wheel. I thought that West German lava was moulded but there are experts out there that know a lot more than me. Thanks for looking.

Looks a bit like raku with a lava glaze?

A lot of the so called "FAT Lava " or german pieces are moulded but with the glazes applied by hand ,but there are also plenty of hand thrown/built studio stuff out there as well , I doubt it's raku , why cover it in lava ? if it was .

I doubt it is raku, but it does look a bit like it to me.
There are some raku pots around with a lava glaze, but this does look more like German "fat lava".

I know that it isn't but when I saw the picture I thought that it looked very much like a piece of studio pottery by Deirdre Burnett or even Lucie Rie!

No they are stoneware in an electric kiln like, I imagine, the vase that started this thread.

If only it was...
The base is only 4cm diameter. Not much room for a backstamp.
I would like to see the bases of some of Deirdre Burnett's pieces but there doesn't seem to be many photos on the net. I gather though that her later volcanic glaze pieces were very different from her early porcelain work. Is that right?
My local gallery has an early pot I could look at but its the later work I need to look at.

Re: This was labelled as 'lava' but is it? (vase)
These days when she does get around to doing work it is in stoneware so it is very different from her earlier work.
I have been trying to get some work from her for a few months, without success, but I might have a piece that I can dig out and, if so, will post a picture.
If so you will be the first to see "Deirdre Burnett's bottom" - and that's a promise!

I was only able to find a bowl by Deirdre Burnett and, although it isn't too clear on the image she does a considerable amount of work on her bases. Here the glazed area within the foot ring is around half an inch deep.
Re: This was labelled as 'lava' but is it? (vase)
There it is! Thanks very much. Is the DB under or on top of the glaze?

When she does get around to making something she does make every effort to get it right and her seal has the letters raised so that they stick out through the glaze.
