Re: Winchcombe Pottery
I guessed so too Davee, I have a couple of other unmarked terracotta pieces that
have similar decoration, and are probably from the same period.

Ray Finch Marked Winchcombe 25cm Fruit Bowl
I have this large Winchcombe bowl, about 25cm wide, which I have been told is by Ray Finch himself. The WP mark has a dot and is very angular. is this Ray Finch 1970's?
Also does anyone know why it has a split, would this be a mistake in production, would it affect the way the bowl is valued as a piece?
Sorry about the fuzzy stuff, it had a piece of felt firmly glued to the base when I bought it, and the glue is very stubborn to get off!

Re: Winchcombe Pottery
I was told that Winchcombe pieces marked with a dot where by Ray Finch himself
As for the crack, looks like a firing crack. May have been sold as s second or taken home by an assistant.

Re: Winchcombe Pottery
It's Ray's personal mark from the early 1970s.
The firing crack seems to have occurred in the biscuit firing i.e. before glazing. I suspect it was a faint hairline that wasn't noticed and it was glazed and then opened wider to be filled with glaze during the glaze firing.

Re: Winchcombe Pottery
It looks to me as if the base is Winchcombe Pottery but the lid is not the right lid.
If you look at the second image down the stoneware body of the lid looks slightly different to that of the base and the internal glaze of the lid is different to the base.
As they say when talking about furniture, it looks like a marriage.

Re: Winchcombe Pottery
The possible good news is that I think the lid is quite likely from a "mottled grey brown" Leach Pottery coffee pot. They did them in 3 different glazes but whenever I seem to look on that well known internet auction site there always seems to be someone trying to pass off a Leach Pottery coffee pot (without the lid) as a jug. So that's the rare piece of the coffee pot. All you need to do is find the more common pot part.
So do keep it.
So do keep it.

Sharing a piece I have had for a little while. Time to move it on.
Well marked, had fun identifying it.

Thank you, not a bad price for this kind of utility piece.
Re: Winchcombe Pottery
Two out of a set of three stoneware oil bottles. One has the usual "S.T." and Winchcombe marks; the other has them combined in a single seal, with the "S" above the "T". I think came up in a discussion on another thread.
I can't remember which mark the third bottle has: it's a bit damaged and languishing somewhere inaccessible right now.

Re: Winchcombe Pottery
Hi
Assuming this is a piece of Winchcombe is it possible to identify the potter - maybe from the decoration? Grateful as ever for any thoughts
Thanks

Re: Winchcombe Pottery
It's not possible to say who the potter was, as the workforce made a number of different ranges of functional ware with specific glazes and decoration as required.
Maybe the person who made this item could or someone else working there at the time, as the wavy lines look weakly executed.

Here's a jug with the familiar mark... Is there any way to date it?

Here's a coffee pot which may be Winchcombe, but it doesn't have a mark.

Re: Winchcombe Pottery
The "updated" WP on the jug was I believe first used in 1978 but is still used.

Re: Winchcombe Pottery
The pouring lip on the Ray Finch coffee pot that I photographed is typical of much of Winchcombe's production of jugs/ lidded pouring vessels.................. but I found a picture of a coffee pot made by Ray in 1979 with a spout like yours, cycladelic.

Re: Winchcombe Pottery
Ray didn't use a dot to signify that it had been made by him on earthenware. He used other marks and then from 1954/5 none until the end of the earthenware period ........... so it could possibly be by Ray.

Re: Winchcombe Pottery
Thanks SP, I didn't realise that, and yes, all my other terracotta pieces have the RF mark.
