Firstly apologies for awful photo

Having read the information on Winchcombe on here and elsewhere I gather that this is pre c 1963 . It has signs of having been used for what was intended - cooking, as base has signs of burning.
BUT is it attributable to anyone ie Finch or Cardew. Could it just be standardware of the time. I found a very similar one on Google images, stating it is by Cardew but no mention as to how that conclusion was reached.

As ever I would be grateful for any thoughts

It is a fairly straightforward traditional style of slip decoration that was used at Winchcombe over a long period.

In my opinion the decoration is a little stilted to be by Cardew and think the decoration was used more in the 1950s, so after he left Winchcombe.

To me it could possibly be by Ray Finch but equally by someone else and even if decorated by Ray it wasn't a "special" piece but just part of the regular production run.

Although people will attribute items such as this to make them more desirable, I think the honest answer is that it's a typical example of Winchcombe slipware. That ought to be enough to make it desirable in any case. It's a good honest dish.

TUSTIN - Winchcombe Pottery - Page 4 Empty Is this a Winchcombe cup and saucer

Post by olipayton January 25th 2017, 2:13 pm

Hi everyone, I picked these up cups and saucers at a very nice price with out really looking at the backstamp - the stamp looks like Winchcombe but not having handled much Winchombe before I am not really sure of what they should look like, any advice much appreciated.

Yes, you're right.
If it had the dot in the lower right quadrant it would be by Ray Finch himself but looks like it's just the PW for standardware. Very nice, though :)

TUSTIN - Winchcombe Pottery - Page 4 Empty Two large Ray Finch vases

Post by r-and-f April 27th 2017, 10:58 pm

Showing off two large Ray Finch vases just acquired.  The taller one is 14.5 inches.  I guess they must have been made in very different periods at Winchcombe.

No dot in the usual place but it may have been made before Ray started using the dot.

Just picked up two large Winchombe items.

First a Ray Finch signed oatmeal charger, then a huge 20 inch Eddie Hopkins Vase also in an Oatmeal glaze. No idea when they got potted but I have an Invoice from 1997 to show the charger cost £38 and the vase £95. think prices have changed in 20 years. No idea of that invoice is from new though as the invoice is from a woman called Pamela not a company/shop. Ideas of age welcome.

Cheers

I think they are dated by impressed mark but hard to see. Photos don't do the lovely pots justice.
