Re: Beverly Bell Hughes (Llandudno, Wales)
Beverley Bell Hughes lives near Llandudno, Wales with her husband, Terry (also a potter). As Beverley is partially sighted the touch and feel of clay is very important. Living by the sea in North Wales her work is inspired by nature and the sand, rocks and rugged landscape of the area. Her aim is to create a bond between the clay dug from the earth and the natural forms of the earth’s surface

Re: Beverly Bell Hughes (Llandudno, Wales)
For me one of the great disappointments of the British studio pottery scene is that Beverley's work is not more appreciated and widely known. I believe that she is one of our greatest talents.

I can't disagree with that ,there were 5 pieces at the exhibition , each one as brilliant as the next , the bowl was Kath's Fav at the showing .

Re: Beverly Bell Hughes (Llandudno, Wales)
difficult to capture , but there are very subtle shades of greens & ochres throughout, small slits and opening let light pass straight through , a truely organic pot .

Re: Beverly Bell Hughes (Llandudno, Wales)
would you describe it as brutalist?

Re: Beverly Bell Hughes (Llandudno, Wales)
You could I suppose , but i thought brutalism applied to other materials other than ceramics , but yes I suppose you could say that or organic , it feels great to touch and I know it doesn't look too much in photos but close up it looks amazing imo.

Re: Beverly Bell Hughes (Llandudno, Wales)
Her work is hand built and quite delicately done as well, as she is partially sighted, so not really brutalist but from Ed's pictures I can understand why you said that.
From experience her work is difficult to photograph.

Re: Beverly Bell Hughes (Llandudno, Wales)
No she doesn't mark her current work - one reason is that with most there is nowhere to put a mark anyway.

I agree John , the very nature of her work makes it very difficult to get the picture right .

Re: Beverly Bell Hughes (Llandudno, Wales)
No problem , each to their own as they say , they can't all be pretty , pretty , it's studio pottery and it comes in all shapes and sizes , the day I start liking the safe monotonous pieces will be time to stop collecting for me , what's your opinion on the likes of Ewen Henderson ( oh how I would like some of that) , Angus Suttie , Gordon Baldwin , work of that ilk , is it too far from the norm ? I can see how this piece can look a bit naff to some though

Re: Beverly Bell Hughes (Llandudno, Wales)
Well out of those you just mentioned Ed, none of them are my thing, but I can see why others may like them. I bought a pot for £1.45 + P&P on ebay recently, so far everyone I've show it to, can see why it only cost £1.50... But I think it's great, so that's all that matters really

Re: Beverly Bell Hughes (Llandudno, Wales)
Not bothered at all potty , I kinda like the idea that some don't like what I like , I like it that way cost doesn't really come into it if I like something personally , it's only when I'm flogging stuff that I care about that side of things , Iv'e paid a lot for some stuff and have had pieces for free as well , I also wouldn't like to hang on to pieces for ever and a day , don't see the point in that at all , that aint collecting , that's hoarding to an extent , I would say honestly that I don't really care for about 80-90% of the ceramics on the forum and that there is a massive ammount of brilliant stuff out there just waiting to be explored

Re: Beverly Bell Hughes (Llandudno, Wales)
Not names I've come across before, but checking them out -
I quite like Ewen Henderson's Standing Form (1993) but that's probably because I used to collect rocks like that - come to think of it I probably still have something like that covered in moss in the garden.
Angus Suttie - tbh I've seen better
Gordon Baldwin - A true professional. I could happily live with a few of his pieces.
But each to his own, I say. Where would we be if we all like the same stuff.
