OK , lets see ..we have two women , the taller ..maybe the mother with one red boob and a musical instrument , the other with two red boobs freeing two doves up towards the moon , symbolic of what i don't know ,so I guess Chinese export to Spain /portugal etc ......well you did say a bad idea was ok Rita

Quite poetic Ed! (apart from the red boobs)
I don't think it's a bad idea at all. I was suspecting it could be chinese, but at the same time it has a mid-century look...

If not chinese, I would still plump for one of the asian countries as the source

that black glaze looks more european to me allbeit with an oriental influence
Re: Sgraffito vase with musical figures, San Marino? Japanese? Saigon, Vietnam?
It's in fact a very dark brown, not black.
What made me suspect it was chinese, apart from the base, was the weight. It's very light.

I would have said Italy. Fantoni, San Marino or similar.

I can't imagine the chinese sgraffitoing a lute on a piece of pottery, even for tourist ware.

The Chinese will copy anything for the market and they are good at it as well.

I can't imagine the Italian leaving the base as poorly finished as on this vase

Naomi, I have to agree with the boys.
I think you would too, if you could see it live and feel its weight.

I think it's a Chinese Pipa not a European Lute.

I'll believe it when I see another example. Until then I'm staying in Europe. You lot have fun in China.

The trees and the birds seems like scandinavian patterns to me.
