Old pottery (possibly Native??)
Hi there:
I have this pitcher type of pottery. Looks Native in design to me. I know nothing about it, or do not know the date of it. It *looks* old IMHO, but is it? Or was it made to look old?? I do not know. I have no knowledge about the designs on it -- except to guess they look either Native American, or Mexican, or Pueblo American.
Any ideas or directions as to any info on this item?
The writing on the bottom means nothing to me as I bought this from an Estate Sale -- so I have no idea of the person named on the bottom. Does *look* old (not sure if ancient) but then I guess one never knows. Looks to be all hand made, and very primitive looking - IMHO

Re: Old pottery (possibly Native??)
Definitely looks old Native American.
There's a more modern piece on ebay at the moment with a similar style of decoration, listed as "Native American Santo Domingo Pueblo Pottery Canteen".
I've found the Smithsonian is very good at answering emails about Native American antiquities so worth send them copies of these photos.

Re: Old pottery (possibly Native??)
This piece is Mexican, probably from the state of Guerrero. Not sure of the age, but possibly 1930's-50's. I have a couple of pieces that appear to be of the same origin, though I have not been able to find much information on this particular type. This kind of ware is often mistaken for Native American pueblo pottery, but further comparisons make it clear it is distinctly Mexican.

Re: Old pottery (possibly Native??)
Native pottery uses natural ochres (iron oxides), so their colour range is very similar.

Re: Old pottery (possibly Native??)
Note some of the differences between your piece and the San Ildefanso olla you linked: the treatment of the foot is entirely different and would not be typical of Pueblo pottery; the Native American piece has an overall burnished surface, whereas yours is matte and unburnished; the pueblo olla uses two different reds and the lower section is red which is standard for this type (as well as Santo Domingo). Also, the floral decoration on your pitcher is not a Native American design.
The following link shows a piece of the same origin as yours:
