Any ideas on this nice old teapot please? There's no maker's mark just 3 red dots.

I am not an expert on this by any means so take this as pointers for further investigation rather than a definitve answer.

Firstly, I think this is the wrong forum as this is not 20th century pottery.
The shape of the teapot is right for late eighteenth century, and the quality and decoration suggest a generic Staffordshire factory rather than a big name.

The lid is interesting. I have seen water jugs with similar but never a teapot (although I've not particularly looked!). The fashion for these was mid-nineteenth century though. So I wonder if the lid is a later addition after the original got broken?

Should have said, I think the three red dots will be an artist mark rather than a factory mark.

Oops - I'm sorry about this being the wrong forum, but I had no idea of the teapot's age! There aren't any clues. It's not clear from the photo but there are little "nails" knocked in around the top on which the lid is supposed to fasten (I think). You can just see one on the top right, from which is running a thin crack (more of a big crazing line really). Thank you for your reply Happy

The pewter lid is a replacement - they often did that when the original lid was broken. I'm not an expert on shapes but based on the crazing to the body which indicates an early date, and the lack of a mark, I'd say it was probably pre-1820s Staffordshire.

Well as I say, I'm not an expert, but the lack of a makers mark indicates pre-Victorian, when they went mad with trademarks and patents, etc, because all the potteries were copying one another's styles, patterns, and pinching their formulas.

The willow pattern was designed around the 1790 so can't be any earlier than that. possible makers might be Masons or Ridgways, or similar for as Gareth has said already, it could have been made my any number of Staffordshire potters. I agree, the lid is a replacement. But personally, i would've put it more around 1850s/60s. that's just an opinion though.

I was wondering Masons - with the hand coloured black transfer print - but a search didn't throw up that particular pattern.

I wouldn't get too excited, Mal. I don't think it's going to be worth much.

Never mind. I may get a £5 for it! Waaah Thanks all. I'm often astonished at how these pieces have survived all this time. However I had NO idea it was THAT old and again I must apologise for posting in the wrong place. I'm sure I'll do it again so I'll apologise now in advance for when and if it happens Happy

I was thinking the same, but again just as an opinion.
