Aha: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_Revolt
On 22 August 1567, Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, 3rd Duke of Alba, marched into Brussels at the head of 10,000 troops.

Brunswick. The elder of the two Brunswick factories - the Herzogliche Fabrik, whose wares are generally marked V H in monogram - began by producing pottery which was clearly Dutch-inspired. Some immensely tall tulip vases exist, remarkably well potted and painted with schematized trees with sponged foliage. The factory produced a number of figures, no coarser than those made at Delft, most occurring in blue monochrome as well as in simple high-temperature colours.

Re: Pottery Owl
Thanks for all that Naomi, I think Brannam is out , I've had a few of theirs and all have been well marked one way or another , this glaze has a high lead content suggesting at least around the 1900's the date 1567 was as you say a revolt also Pieter Breugel the Elder was born , so many of his paintings featured stoneware mugs / beer tankards in the peasant scenes , again this throwing me towards Belgian , I have sent pics to pottery museum in Raeren , but I'll be lucky to get a reply , No matter where he's from I think he looks great , Thanks again Naomi

But the description of that french glaze seems spot on , I know zilch about that period other than high contents of lead were used to get the green iridescent look . if I could just find a comparison somwhere else I would be happy , france , belgium anywhere

Re: Pottery Owl
a very speculative thought, could it perhaps be a pigeon and not an owl? the reason i say this is the top looks like a soldier's helmet and i wondered if it commemorates a war carrier pigeon? perhaps with their ID code on the front??
Re: Pottery Owl
Thanks Naomi , I will try the first one that looks good , I don't like the form filling , Bisto - I have to thank you for giving me and my OH a good laugh, a pigeon ? I'm not sure the helmet actually goes with it , I'm sure it's a date not an id code or as Kath says maybe it's his prison number You have a great imagination , I wish it was a pigeon now , I love that Idea , personally I think he looks more like a chicken
