Ash glazed Studio pot with underglaze decoration
Now I know that I am supposed to know about these things but the pot below has been sitting on a shelf in my office unidentified for months, maybe years, and during an untypical dusting frenzy today I picked it up and thought - I wonder if that's by ........
So a name did come into my head but it isn't like examples that I've seen, although it does look to be from the 1950s/60s, which would make it from an earlier period.
Any comments would be most welcome.

The images above are thumbnails so expand and there is no impressed mark. There does appear to be the small painted mark at 12 o'clock on the base picture that I have shown below:-

Would Dan Arbeid have used a single A as a signature ?

I don't think Dan Arbeid could throw or at least throw as well as this pot has been.

Helen Pincombe? She didn't mark all her work, but the clay isn't the same as others I've seen. The mark is mysterious ? Is it an A? T? E?

I would say that mark is an A , it's how I do mine and it has a dot after it , what it stands for I have no idea

Re: Ash glazed Studio pot with underglaze decoration
Saw a very similar mark on a pot today, along with a label which said Chillington Bristow S. Devon.
Not one of their usual pieces, though, assuming it is them. They do the sgraffito/stippled decorated pottery.

I'm 99.99% sure it's not Bristow Pottery.
The mark Bristow Pottery used while at Chillington does often look a bit like this tho, as it seems to change a lot from pot to pot. But the why it's potted / decorated / clay is totally different.

Just read your post properly SP, is the potter you thought of Bernard Forrester?
It's the potter I keep thinking of when I see this mark.
I know very little about his work tho.

Potty gets the prize
It does look as if it could be his painted F., as when signing like that you don't always get it exactly the same, but I haven't found any images of his work that look remotely similar. Helen Pincombe is a good call, as the decoration looks like hers but I think it's going to remain a mystery.

Wooo
It does, and "the book" does mention he worked in stoneware using wood-ash glazes... so it may well be, but like you I've not seen any of his work that resembles your pot, tho the period does seem to fit.

Re: Ash glazed Studio pot with underglaze decoration
The mark looks like a chinese or japanese character. Could it be oriental?

His work does seem to be very varied tho, his porcelain is a million miles away from his eathenware. But I've not seen any of his wood-ash glazed stoneware before.
