It's a grey stoneware jug with cobalt blue decoration that is typical of the Westerwald region, Germany. Datewise, I'd guess early 20th Century.

To add, such pottery as been made for hundreds of years. From what I've heard ( from a friend who collects such pottery), the early pieces have clay decoration that was made first in small moulds, then applied to the body (cf. white porcelain decoration on Wedgwood Jasperware). With later items, the decoration was stamped directly onto the body of the pot, as in this example.

Thank you all so much for the info, I have a whole load of pottery to sort through that has been left to me and it is now taking alot of my time sorting so thank you all for the info it is greatly appreciated, i am getting through some of it but will have to off load some of it somehow as it is taking up alot of space and some is not really my taste,

Since it doesn't have Germany in the back stamp it's probably pre-1900 (when import tax rules meant you needed to include country of origin), so more like late 19th Century.

yes thats what i thought Naomi, I have four other pieces that were with this jug but think by the patterns and mark they might be different maker, think i saw something in Gerz link, will post them up in new thread,
