John Beswick Ltd, Longton (Staffs).
Hi,
In a moment of madness I purchased 2 damaged Beswick horses for the princely sum of £1.50 last weekend. I didn't recognise the Beswick mark but at the price I thought them worth the risk. Both are in a Dapple Grey matt colourway and have damaged to legs to varying degrees. The larger horse has a complete break to front leg with just a little of damaged area missing. The smaller horse has had 2 damaged legs poorly restored. I have discovered that Beswick used a very similar stamp mark before 1990 but the word Beswick seems to be larger than the word England as opposed to being the same size in my examples. Does anyone think these are fakes please.
Thanks,
Bryn
Info from Gareth:
John Beswick was one of the early Beswick family, and he first introduced animal figures. The company was called John Beswick Ltd at one time.
However, John Beswick has been used as a trade name since 2005/6 when someone called John Sinclair bought the rights to the Beswick brand from Royal Doulton. It is used for a cheaper giftware range (made overseas).
I don't know much about the range but I believe they do some resin figures.

Hi Gareth,
It's a bit naughty that they are allowed to use the John Beswick name though don't you think? It's even worse than the people who are copying Whitefriars Glass items at the moment as they don't add labels to their fakes.
Thanks for your help. The horses always looked a bit dodgy and I'm not bothered really as I said they were cheap. I can now remember seeing a similar horse in a local charity shop which incidently was also damaged. I wonder where this Mr Sinclair sells his items?
Cheers,
Bryn

I'm afraid not, although it does say the first version of your figure (you have the second version) was introduced in 1974 and designed by Graham Tongue.
Question about Beswick horse backstamps
Hi guys and indeed girls, I am looking on some info on Beswick horse backstamps. I have from my sister 2 glossy horses with circle backstamp, "Beswick England" outside of this stamp and under the glaze is a number which is freehand, on one horse is a 0, and on the other is the number 96. I know these are quite old as she was given them as a Wedding present just over 40yrs ago, and they were not new then, but they are in perfect condition, sadly god bless her, she passes away this good friday, and i am just trying to give myself something to occupy my mind, but in doing so have become very interested in these forums.Could somebody let me know what the numbers on the horses belly would be, i can not find horses with numbers on.Thanks for your time

Re: John Beswick Ltd, Longton (Staffs).
"Beswick 578 pitcher vase first designed in 1935 by Symcox"
Found that from a quick google search. It does not mention how long it was in production, but would think late 30's is about right for yours.

Beswick
Beswick was established in 1894, in Longton, Staffordshire and was taken by John Beswick, from his father, in 1921.
The company became a trendsetter, producing a wide range of highly popular domestic wares, before and after WWII.

1950's zebra-striped vase, shape 1367, design by Arthur Hallam (c.1912-76).

Yes, apparently Jessie Tait's "Zambesi" pattern for Midwinter was the first one of many that followed.

Yes, the glaze and shape and numbering on the base are typical of the 1930s.
Possibly Crown Devon or Howard/Brentleigh Pottery

Re: John Beswick Ltd, Longton (Staffs).
Thank you for a swift response. I think Potty is right, I've found almost identical pieces on ebay. Crown Devon or Howard/Brentleigh Pottery have very similar pieces but the glaze looks the same on Beswick pieces.
It's confusing when not marked.
