Man on a horse - studio pottery? Italian? Empty Man on a horse - studio pottery? Italian?

Apologies for the poor image - taken from my phone. I spotted this in a shop today and thought it was very interesting, but couldn't tell what it was. There's no mark. The whole figure is hollow, and open at the top like a vase, but also open at the bottom, as it it was meant to sit on top of a plate or something. White glaze inside, possibly made of white earthenware. Intriguing. Anyone seen anything like it? It's around 30cm high.

Possibly a candlestick. Don't know who'd have made it, though, but it's so distinctive you'd soon recognise the potter if you saw another of his/her pieces.

Very nice. Did you buy it? I wouldn't have left it in the shop.

This is why I'm asking. It's a junk-shoppy sort of place, and the guy didn't know what it was, but still wanted £40. Could be a sleeper, could be junk. It's got kind of a classical Greek feel to it, but I'm sure it's mid-century onwards. I think I'd be comfortable paying £20, because I like it, but £40's a bit much without info.

I'm not an expert, but it could be.

Another thought I had was that maybe it could be Scandinavian?

The applied emblem on the mans chest reminds me of Ed's dish here:

Rather a long shot though...

Yes, Potty, I can see the resemblance. Similar use of glaze too. Damn! Hope it's still there when I can next get to it in three days!

Could it be a lamp base ? it reminds a bit of scandi stuff , but Adam Dworski did similar pieces I think , but I've only seen marked pieces by him , either initials or WYE .

Isn't it perhaps a bit over-stylised for Adam Dworski? It's almost like an illustration. But yes, I thought lamp base, except the lip at the top curves outwards and you'd expect a lamp base to have more of a straight cylinder. Plus, there's no hole or cutaway for the flex.

There's something in the back of my mind about maybe one of the Greek philosophers riding a donkey. Or maybe someone like Aesop? I can't help thinking this piece is an illustration of something historical or literary. Wish I'd paid more attention when I studied classics!

If it's missing a hat then it might represent Don Quixote

£40 is a bit steep, though. That's more like retail price for something that was identified.

Alternatively it could be out of Cantebury Tales. Rye pottery has done a series recently, although not like this one.

I don't think it's Adam Dworski and agree that his pieces seem to always have a mark or "Wye".

I've got a feeling it's British personally.

What's the condition like? The 1 ear does look like it could be chipped, but it's hard to tell.

In my opinion buy it if you love it, but if / when you come to sell it, you could get less than you paid. (It's the kind of item that would not surprise me to do a fair bit better than £40 if 2 people liked it a lot)

Also I'd advise trying your best to get the price down! (I'd start at £25 and aim for £30 were it me)

Okay, so I'm the proud owner of a horse thing. Got it for a tenner, because the ears are damaged, sadly. Here's a few more pics (the horse's tail is a jug handle, by the way!)

Are you sure there are no incised marks under the glaze, either on the inside or outside?

Not a sign. I thought for a minute there was something worked into the design on one side of the horse, but I think it's just decoration (although strangely not repeated on the other side). I do think it's odd that something so nice should be unsigned, but perhaps there should be a dish or something under it. Otherwise, why the open base?
