Re: Teabowls
I have been looking at his work of late but haven't seen any with the glaze as good as that.

Re: Teabowls
There have been a number of Matsubara’s pots for sale recently but I saw that Steve Booton had one of his with this blue & white shino glaze so I searched around and found a pair in Japan on Etsy

Re: Teabowls
You must have quite quite a collection of teabowls etc. from around the world now. Do you have them on display and is there an aim? For example are you trying to get an example by every potter that you admire.

Re: Teabowls
I guess it’s three fold.
Firstly I have a wish list of good modern studio tea bowl makers such as Akira Satake, and Campbell Hegan, who I’ll buy at some point.
Secondly there are potters who’s work I love, such as Steve Booton and Tomoo Hamada, and I’ll add to the general collection each year, but preferably tea bowls because otherwise the choice is just too large or out of my price range, and I have one eye on resale and a lot of pot forms don’t have a resale market, but I think tea bowls will continue to be collected in decades to come.
And thirdly I like to support new potters at the fairs and on Etsy and some of the Galleries like St Ives, Thrown and New Ashgate. And if they make teabowls then that’s my preferred choice of pot. And Etsy means I’m not limited to this country, and I can buy direct from the potters, and in some cases, have the pick of the kiln.

Re: Teabowls
That's all very laudable and I agree with you about teabowls.

Re: Teabowls
You are correct about the photos and there is absolutely no real information about her that I could find on the website. I have never heard of her so can you tell me more?

Re: Teabowls
Not much of a bio on Goldmark's website. There were a number of her pieces in the Leonard and Alison Shurz auction but Partridges just quoted from Goldmark. Found a video on the Goldmark website

I suspect you'd need to search in Japanese for more

Re: Teabowls
Thanks, Naomi.
I think the video tells me everything i.e. that's she quite young; uses many different Japanese glaze styles and moved to Mashiko and that's how they would have come across her.

Re: Teabowls
About perfectly leaky Japanese teabowls. Is that about the impermanence of things or about using green tea for surface cleaning and handwashing, or...

Re: Teabowls
Hagi ware is the porous pottery used for tea bowls amongst other things. Each Prefecture in Japan has a different type of clay which has different properties. Hagi ware was found to be porous and changes colour over time as the tannin from the tea seeps in. The pots should be used regularly to build up a golden hue. I think it's believed to make the tea taste milder, but at the end of the day it's simply a function of the type of clay available in the region.
