Lucien Rie at York Art gallery exhibition. On show for all of this year and well into next. Very well worth going to, a comprehensive exhibition of most of her career, with perhaps just a bit short the very late works.

Lucie Rie's domestic work from the mid 50's to early 60's is esoecially interesting.

A very interesting price list from the current exhibition at York City Art Gallery. At the famous Peter Dingley Gallery in Straford Upon Avon in 1978.

Lucie Rie prices are on the left. Range from £90 to £200. Also includes Eileen Lewenstein and John Ward. Now if only one had started collecting then!

I was in York in July but didn't known about that exhibition.

200 pounds in 1978 is equal to well over a grand now - not many people splash out that much on a new piece.

I have just looked through all the pics on this thread and wondered if her rubbish pieces also sell for big money?

As for a £1000 for a pot. That and a lot more at the fancy London shows,
CERAMIC ART and COLLECT. The high end of the studio pottery market has moved into a much higher price level in the past few years.

For completeness the best resource of all -for both images and prices- is the Bonhams website. Before the 2008 financial crash Bonhams were THE auction house for Lucie Rie. Run by Cyril Frankel for nearly two decades, the Bonhams auctions wre the place to see Rie. Over 1000+ items on this link. 50 to a page.

The following pieces are part of the private collection of the Salisbury collection of a family in Cambridge. They have been lent to the Fitzwilliam Museum and are available to view until July 2019. Again apologies for some of the reflections. With the York and Sainsbury East Anglia pieces, the total images give a fairly good cross section of her work.

An interesting piece in the Antiques Gazette about Lucie Rie fakes made by Jeremy Broadway:
Firstly the weight distribution - Broadway’s fakes lacked the thickness graduation from base to rim that are typical of Rie’s work. Secondly: Lucie Rie’s “thin and scratchy blue lines, but on [Broadway’s] the lines were thicker and more precise. They lacked spontaneity.” And lastly, Rie fired once where as Broadway’s first had a biscuit firing before glazing.

With some of those pretty little yellow and blue bowls heading upwards over £50,000 the market has shot up since Broadway's time...…

A plain black teacup by Lucie Rie discovered among a cheap auction lot of pots by a local amateur potter. Lovely to own but at the same time problematic.
