Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part One
Not too bad. Impressed circles with iron oxide that have been glazed over with magnolia glaze.
(apologies - these are coming out a bit large - not too sure how to reduce the size).

Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part One

these plates for Southern Gas have been discussed on the Poole forum so one of our members will no doubt tell you the exact year,I don't remember those sort of details

Here's a theory - this is about the time that Alfred Reed left Poole and just before Jefferson was appointed. I wonder if they were in the process of finding a new resident designer and these pieces were some sort of test for applicants.
I think it's more likely a presentation piece. Mr M Long from the Accounts department, retiring after 42 years dedicated service, that sort of thing. Guy has obviously signed it after glazing so I imagine he would have written the name and date too.
According to the Hawkins book Alfred Read was still about for a little while after Jefferson was appointed in Jan 1958, although mainly at the tile works.

You're probably right but other presentation pieces I've seen are versions of production pieces rather than one-off pieces and they usually have something like "presented to" on them if there is a specific person involved. Ie., if you are going to the trouble of producing a unique presentation piece for Mr Long in Accounts for his retirement, why not put "Presented to M. Long for 42 years service" on it.

My vote would be that it's a trial of some sort. The letters don't have the cohesion/sophistication of a paintress's monogram.
Very nice pieces too!. I alway like the summer - you can get some great bargains when other people are away on holiday !
