I've seen a vase for sale online and it has the same R mark as I've posted. The seller states the artist is Pat Notley, someone whose name is new to me.
Pat Notley is listed in the book as a thrower and the mark is PN combined. It looks a little like a R with wishful thinking but is not the mark you've posted and, in any case, a thrower's mark would be impressed. So the seller is wrong.
Most people attribute the R to Ros Sommerfelt although it is not in the book.

I don't know the name Josephine Wall. That mark looks a bit like Nellie Bishton's later mark... I've read she worked at Poole until 1976. It also looks like the initials H F
Here is Josephine Wall's mark. She was a Delphis paintress 1967 - 1968. Nellie Bishton was a Traditional paintress and later paint shop supervisor until 1976.

Yes, we never got an ID for this one although it is quite common. It often looks more like JOC but who knows

Many thanks, Gareth
Did Nellie do any painting on Delphis items?

Yes, we never did find out who that was unfortunately. I have a couple of 49ers with the enigmatic JOC signature ...

Are you sure Dan, or are you thinking of the mystery MIA Sienna mark?
The JOC mark is on 1960's Delphis but Sienna was late 1970's.

Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part One
Had this small bowl in the shop recently so I took some pics for the forum. (Unfortunately the middle section of the bowl was badly cracked):

Looks like it's probably just badly stained crazing, rather than actual cracks.

No, actual cracks through the glaze, in a circle on the inner surface. Someone probably used it to heat something up in the microwave.

Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part One
I wonder if there was a transition in the various shapes of the 6" vase 83 or if some shapes were made during the same period.
Here is one signed by Carol Cutler. My guess is it is from 1969 - 1970:

Here's another 63, signed by Pamela Bevens. Is this also from 1969 - 1970?

This 83 seems earlier than the above two as it's carved. The paintress is Christine Tate.
Does anyone know when the carving to vases ceased?

Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part One
I think this is a later shape 83.
It's hand-thrown, but I have some slip-cast ones that are basically this shape.
It looks like Angela Wyburgh's later mark on the base.

Quite a few of the Delphis vases came in different forms with the same shape number (15, 31, 83, 84, 85, 93).
There is a postcard from the 1970's showing a batch of Delphis just out of the kiln and you can see 3 different 83 forms and 2 different 85's so they definitely made different forms at the same time as each other. I am not aware of a progression as such but some shapes, like the straight-sided 83/84/85 (which were also sometimes carved like yours) and the "ice cream cone" shape 83, only occur in 1960's glazes.
I have a carved Carol Cutler 84 so they were definitely still carving in 1969.
The last one you posted has early 1970's standardised glazes although I don't think it looks Angela Wyburgh's style.
Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part One
Thanks, Gareth - I thought Poole must have been producing the various forms of those vases at the same time. Do you have that postcard?
Whose mark do you think that is?... I thought it looked most like Angela's.

I know someone who may be able to get in contact with Angela Wyburgh, I'll see if I can get any more info.[/quote]
Is it poss' to ask Angela about the dates to check to she was at Poole earlier than 1968?

Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part One
I believe that shape nos. of delphis vases relate primarily to the height rather than a standardised shape, i.e. shape 83 - 6", 84 - 9", so that there can be many variations in each shape range as most were thrown. Not sure why both shape 15 and 84 were used for 9" high vases but then Poole is full of anomalies that don't really matter in the overall scheme of things. Personally I don't think its worth getting too worried about who might have painted something. The glazes, design etc. will be the final mark of quality although always nice to see a C. Holden or C. Tate mark ( for example )

Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part One
Can anyone tell me when Thelma Bush worked at Poole?
I believe this 8" Studio plate has her mark and that the transfer is from 1964-1966.

Yes, I do have the postcard. Not sure I can post it here though due to copyright.
I don 't know who the mark is but I don't think it's Angela Wyburgh.
I have tried to get in contact with Angela via third party but she has apparently moved recently so it is proving more difficult than I thought.
Thelma Bush worked 1966 - 1968 according to Hayward & Atterbury.

Thanks, Gareth.
I thought the Studio pieces above were 1966, but for some reason had got the idea that Thelma was at Poole much earlier.
