Hi folks, just acquired this and trying to date it. Can I assume that as there's no "England" or "Made in England" it's an early piece?
Measures about 9 inches diameter.
Many thanks.

Bretby Art Pottery - Henry Tooth & Co. Ltd Bretby11

Info from Studio-Pots:  I have now been able to find that the shape number 1852 was introduced in 1911 and there is no more information until shape 2326, which was introduced in 1924.

Therefore your bowl shape is post 1911 but I think that it is possible that it is part of their Nerton Ware range, which was a range of glazes brought in in 1920 (with matt versions brought in as well the following year). The glazes were general used separately and the different colours were gold-stone, blue aventurine, green, rose and royal blue. There were also a version where green and yellow glazes were used on the same piece and also a mottled glaze version.

Picked up in a Charity Shop in Barnard Castle. Clanta Ware vase. Didn't know what it was when I bought it but I loved the Secessionist styling.

Approx. 9 inches tall.
Need help with this to give me some clues. I can see 'Hand Made' but the stamp is not clear at all. Does anyone recognise this?

Thirty years ago I would have known immediately but as the memory of this kind of thing fades I can't be certain.

Think it might be Bretby Art Pottery i.e. Tooth & Co. of Woodville.

Denbydump will know for certain I'm sure.

A pair of Dutch children wall plaques. Despite the Art-nouveau styling of the "frames",
these are in fact from the late 1920s.

Often unmarked, these jardinieres were produced in large numbers, in various
sizes and colourways. This has one of the typical dimpled designs.

"Blossom ware", with an applied sprig of pink flowers, was produced until the mid-1950s,
on bowls, jugs and vases.
Usually no Bretby mark, it has "handmade" and a shape number incised, and
"Made in England" impressed.

Bretby Art Pottery - Henry Tooth & Co. Ltd Empty Clanta Made in England 2354K cherub terracotta planter - Bretby

Post by thelittlelady March 26th 2017, 2:23 am

Hi,
I'm trying to find out more about this planter my mum gave me, she acquired it from her aunt years ago and it's been in the garden neglected for years. Markings as per photos, "Clanta Made in England 2354K" with an asterix to the right of these markings. Looks like it's made of terracotta with a black wash painted over it. The photos showing the cherubs are a bit dark, the true colour is as per the markings photo.I have pressure cleaned it a little as I thought it was just an ordinary pot, but it didn't take off a lot of the black. The outside shows cherubs holding long stretches of material intertwined with leaves and fruit? It weighs 5 kg (11 pounds) and stands 25.5cms (10 inches) and it's diameter is 28cms (11 inches). I have tried to find it via Google but have only seen smaller ones weighing 2.5 kg and are glazed. Looking forward to finding out a bit more about it. Thank you. Clanta was a range produced by the Bretby company. That round disk underneath the number on the base should read Bretby. It would have started off being painted completely black I would suggest. I have certainly seen a fair few painted in that manner. Dating from just after 1900 from the stamp used.

Bretby Art Pottery - Henry Tooth & Co. Ltd Empty Bretby Pottery Vase - Can anyone supply any info?

Post by seandux December 8th 2017, 8:52 pm

Hi All - hope someone can help. I found this Bretby Pottery Vase in one of our local auctions in the North West of England but can only find scant information about Bretby. There is no number on the base simply the Bretby impressed stamp which (according to the little info I have found) could mean it is a very early example. It has a simply 'copper' glaze but that looks as if it has been unevenly applied (or maybe with age has faded at uneven rates?). Quite large at 27 cm tall x 18 cm wide at the widest part and weighs in at almost 2 kgs. I'm afraid that's about I can say but if anyone can fill in any more information (date etc) it would be much appreciated. Thanks

The "rising sun" mark was first registered in 1884, but used throughout the
production of the pottery.
They used all sorts of glazes, but I would tend to towards an Oxblood
vase, probably early 20thC. A nice large piece.

I will move it to the Bretby thread eventually.

The type of design would normally nudge it to the between 1905-1920 when this type of glaze was most in fashion. Companies like Ruskin, Pilkington, Bretby, Ault all had ranges. Mid 1920's onwards things change with Art deco's paler colours.

It’s usually a pattern number, and the letter at the end might be a size code.
