Re: Bretby Art Pottery - Henry Tooth & Co. Ltd
I think this is quite a late piece, probably from the 1950s.
Re: Bretby Art Pottery - Henry Tooth & Co. Ltd
It does have strict almost utilitarian circa 1950 loo to it, when government rationing was still in full force.

Thanks guys, the stamp looks so minimal that I wasn't sure if it was a Bretby! I've just always loved it while my other vases come & go :)

Help Identifying the Artist of this Bretby Owl Vase
Hi,
I have recently purchased a large 10 x 7 inch Bretby vase that has the unusual decoration of two owls. One is in a moonlit scene between two tress and the other is in flight. Also which I find quite unusual is that the decoration is in thick enamels.
Would you be able to find out for me the artist and the red glaze to the vase.
Many Thanks.

Lovely. Helps to have a photo of the base. There may be a pattern number

So the decoration is Over the glaze?
Has it scratched? Will it scratch? or has it been fired on?

Re: Bretby Art Pottery - Henry Tooth & Co. Ltd
Yes, I was wondering if it was a later overpainting by a previous owner

Re: Bretby Art Pottery - Henry Tooth & Co. Ltd
Good afternoon,
In reply to the owl decoration which i am no expert, the decoration is over the glaze,
it appears fired on and does not scratch off.
I feel that there is a lighter red colour around the moon to depict the moonlight plus the painted gilt moon has an area of loss and is totally white underneath which would have been original.
Thank you.

A 10 in long cold painted cat with glass eyes, with a ball of wool, #1319, c1901.
There is also a model with it holding a cotton reel, and a rarer third model that
escapes me ATM. They originally had a red or pink ribbon collar, often missing.
They were also made with open backs as Posy holders.
They were later re-issued in a proper full black gloss glaze, again with ribbon
collars. There were also smaller versions of the same models.

Info On Bretby Unglazed Sculpture Pleae
Hello ( and thanks for allowing me to join the forum )
At a recent auction I purchased a number of Bretby Pottery items, including vases and a parrot. What caught my eye though was an unglazed terracotta type finish to a super study of a young boy sat on a stone plinth. I have not been able to find its like anywhere and wonder if anyone can help with any information. It carries the full Bretby logo, Made In England and pattern number 3410 to the inside of the base.
Many thanks

It would date to approx 1933/34. Can't say I have seen this model, and no reference
in the book, but usually their figures were glazed, so it maybe unfinished, unless it
was an attempt at mimicing "Parian ware".

Re: Bretby Art Pottery - Henry Tooth & Co. Ltd
The number 2217 dates it to around 1911 - 1914.
B indicates it was one of a pair.
It looks like one of the "Flame" glazes, but no idea if it had a name as such.
A nice colourful piece, though you didn't say how tall it is, but we don't give
valuations on the forum sorry.
