Does anyone recognise this pottery and / or the backstamp? its approx 8" 3.5" and looks European to me.  Any thoughts really welcome.

your tray is mostly used as a butter dish and was made by hans schneider in steffisburg (near berne), switzerland.

Many thanks for your comments I'd no idea about these different potteries. I've had a look at Hans Schneiders work and as you say its one of his pieces. I shall put it safely on my window ledge now as I rather like it :) many thanks, I do appreciate your time.
