I got this bowl today, the foot has a hole in it for wall mounting and someone has cleverly put an eyed split pin through that hole. I have screwed a hook into the underside of a shelf and hung the bowl which allows lots of movement the light then catches the colours in lots of different ways plus it also gives the illusion that the butterfly is airborne.

Sorry, I'm afraid I don't know that much about the various painters other than Joyce Morgan - she's my favourite.

Here is the first piece of Joyce Morgan/Chelsea we ever bought - a few years ago now, it was £1.50 in a charity shop (serious bargain!) we knew nothing about Chelsea at the time but liked the funky cat. This sparked our interest. The cat & animal designs are amongst the most sought after.

Chelsea Pottery was established in Radnor Walk, London SW3 in 1952 by David Rawnsley and his wife Mary. It was run like a club where any potter could work and study pottery for an annual sub of 5 guineas and an hourly fee of sixpence plus a further sixpence for a pound of clay. Joyce Morgan was the main instructor at their evening classes for amateurs and her work is amongst the most sought after by collectors - she was originally working as a fabric designer in Paris when she met David.

In 1959 the Rawnsleys left London and set up another pottery in the Bahamas – Joyce joined them there but didn’t like the climate and came back to London after just 5 months. She returned to Radnor Walk and helped Brian Hubbard run Chelsea Pottery for nearly 40 years more with various other potters and modelers.

They had a rich and famous clientele consisting of various leading actors and musicians and were hugely successful for many years. Brian met The Beatles in a TV studio in the early 1960s and stayed in contact with Paul McCartney who commissioned Chelsea to make Christmas mugs for him for many years afterwards.

The pottery moved to Ebury Mews in 1994 but sadly a combination of a poor dollar/sterling exchange rate, their 3 year lease coming to an end and huge rents and rates forced it to close in 1997.

so many of the Chelsea pieces sold today would have been made by amateurs?

Some of the early pieces yes - and this is probably the reason why we don't have more of an idea of the painters & their respective monograms from that early period. However, production from the last 40 odd years where Joyce ran the pottery with Brian Hubbard I would have thought was run much more conventionally with pro potters and painters.

how can you tell when a piece was made? Were the early pieces marked differently to the later production?
