Post by NaomiM May 15th 2012, 10:07 pm

Hi, I came across this forum while researching a Chelsea Pottery wall plate I bought from a charity shop (I think it's wonderful - and the forum :) )

Do you think the initials are Joyce Morgan's?

I also have this cake or cheese cover (missing its base), and it's only just struck me - comparing it side by side with the plate - that it might also be by Chelsea Pottery.
It's made from the same red pottery as the plate, and has the same 'soft focus' decoration.
There's a decorator's name or initials on the front - which I think says Jon or Jan - but unlike the plate there's no 'chelsea pottery England' inscribed by hand on the back. (The makers mark was probably on the missing base).
I found it in a local charity shop a few years ago.

I would have said so.

The decoration is right for her work.

Hi, I just found this forum and glad I did. I just purchased a very large platter (19" diameter) of two bird (cranes?) marked Chelsea Pottery 1953 E II R at a fair. I bought it because I think it's a lovely work of art. The seller says he picked it up in an estate sale in Hawaii. It looks a bit different from the prices on the forums but looks similar to some pieces on the V & A collections site. Looking for any information about the piece. I will upload pics as soon as I can...seems my iPad does not like the software. chelsea - Chelsea Pottery (London) - Page 3 335061337

The platter is lovely.

1953 was the year of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, hence the EIIR.

From the research I've done on Chelsea pottery since I purchased the platter I've only seen one other plate for the coronation and it was about 6" in diameter. I haven't found any marks identifying the artist. Any clues? Does the E II R mean it was just made in the year of the queens coronation...anything else?

if there's no monogram on the front your best bet is to go through the pics in this thread and compare styles

Found a pair of Chelsea Pottery mugs at the local charity shop. Initialled BR. Not much colour to them, but nicely drawn flowers and strawberries.

Yes.
It's not a signature.

Oh fudge! Don't you just hate it when you take a photo and it shows up a rather nasty hairline that extends almost the whole way round the piece.

Anyway, checking through the other uploads on the thread I think the BR may be Barbara Ross.

Thanks for the info. The seller thought it may be the artist initials and number of pieces but that didn't make sense to me. I found references to the coronation on a few other sites so thought that might be the case. Some lovely pieces on this forum, I especially like the Barbara Ross blue lady bowl..just lovely. I'll be looking for more Chelsea Pottery in my travels, that is for sure.

I got this a while back. Confused me at first with the Bahamas inscription but I understand subsequently that David Rawnsley left London for the Bahamas in around 1958/59.

Does anyone know who BB might be?

Just looked on the V&A website and it's exactly the same as the fish dishes there. Amazing quality. Those are 20cm and this one is 30cm
