VERY NICE Lion mug Dan.
Much better execution of the design than most.
I'm incline to say that's an early Newlyn mug or very late if Mousehole.
Although that 'design' either side of handle is more like what I expect from Mousehole.
Could you show a pic of the base and the handle.

I have only seen the oriental style design on Mousehole pots decorated by Maggie.
I'll post more pics tomorrow

Thanks Dan.
That is a very interesting handle, I've never seen one like that.
It seems to be a mix of both the typical Mousehole one in attachment, but like the Newlyn ones in shape.
So I guess this must be around the transition.
But I can now see the glaze does look to be painted on.
So yeh, I'd say this is late Mousehole.

The Lion design isn't particularly uncommon, but good examples are. Certainly during Newlyn times it tended to look more like a griffin/dragon, than the lion it started out as. It is certainly a design from the very early days, before Celtic Pottery - I've got one with a 'The Studio .....' label.
I'll add a few of mine later

That's one you did beat me to then - I never even saw it!
Was wondering where you found that.
I would have had to think seriously about it, but would probably have made an offer as well.

But I've realised I have seen that handle once before (but only once), I have a very yellow hand made mug with the bird design, with that handle and mine seems to be Mousehole.

This came from ebay last week and cost a folding red one. Sadly missing it's label. Is it Maggie also? To me it looks similar to one of Dan's blue dishes on this thread? But the back is relatively plain without much work. It's very light and thinly thrown - not chunky. Also very uneven, not symmetrical. Heaps of texture and colour and lost of contrasting surfaces, shiny/matt smooth/scraffito etc.

Tile - exactly as Celtic Fan's (yellow 1979) except it's got a date mark for 1973 on the back. A friend mentioned he also had one dated 1972.

Am I right in thinking that this 25 cms tall jug is from Celtic Newlyn and if so what sort of date would it be? Thanks for any suggestions, John

Dear ALL, this is news I really didn't want to breaking, but -
I have just heard the very sad news that Maggi passed away on 9th January 2014, aged 78.

The only mention I can find is this obituary from Canada
http://www.lifenews.ca/announcement/4334702-fisher-maggie-nee-smyth

I've also spoken to a an ebayer, who kindly confirmed that her friend had attended the funeral, which was well attended.

This news has come as such a shock, as she seemed so full of life when I spoke to her last year and 78 is relatively young these days.

I'm sure you will all join me in offer our sincere condolences to her family and friends.

I quite like the straw coloured Medallion decoration on this horse as it brings out the sculptural form.

Signed just MAGGI

One pot signature that I've only ever seen once.
Acquired this tall coffee pot a few years ago.
