Maws bird tile

I was in York earlier this month and stayed in a central B&B called the Bar Convent. It's still run by nuns - and 'bar' refers to the nearby city gate.

Below are two photos of the ground floor, which is where guests have breakfast. I was admiring the tiles when one sister mentioned they were made by Maw. They are in great condition.

It's possible to pop in for a look as they serve tea. There's a wonderful 'secret' garden at the back of the property.

Wow, thank god no one updated it in the last 120 years. It shows the best of what is possible from these tile companies. It is never going to be repeated or bettered.

Yes -- I guess the nuns just left everything as it was. It's only been a guest house for about 20 years.

Although at one time being the largest tile manufacturer in the country,
they also produced some stunning art pottery, with Walter Crane, a top
designer, working there from c1874-1890.
Sadly I don't currently own a piece.

Should they be merged?

I deliberately de-merged them Naomi. Apart from the name there isn't
really a connection.

Very few people own a piece. You have the what I call normal pieces, standard shape ceramics with tiles glazes. Nice to look, rare as hell and showing off what they could do but as a vase rather than a tile (I have owned two in the past).
Then you have the stupidly rare stuff, the show off look at me chargers and vases. Designer items made for exhibition and to advertise the company (I have owned one charger). About one surfaces a year to the market and if they get picked up go for very high prices (but they have been known to slip through as people seem to be ignorant of much of our ceramic history and pick popular names ever effort/skill).

My one year old (today) grand Niece is already obsessed by my one MAW tile.
The appreciation of studio and art pottery must be a family trait

Well I went to the new V&A entrance today and they have a courtyard that in days gone past would have been filled with lovely tiles. Everything is this space is highly considered and 'designed' - it's meant like your tiles to last a 'very long time'

What is my point...

The space is fantastic but ..I hate the tiles - they are shite. If you check out on the south side they are all over the shop, gaps between the tiles is terrible. I could have done better.

There is even a video on the making of the tiles.

They should have gone to MAW and Co. ...they had standards.

I dread to think how much each of those tiles cost?
