Fishley Holland family, Dunster & Minehead Potteries - Page 3 Empty Studio bowl by Fishley-Holland

Post by abstract toad February 22nd 2021, 11:52 am

Nice little bowl, buried away for at least the last 12 + years, one of my earlier pieces purchased.
I never liked the glaze, but the bird in the bowl got me, from what little I remember about it. I think I got this one from the York racecourse car boot.
Clear incised mark to the base. Any help with ID welcomed, thank you.

Hmm it's possible, but I don't remember it specifically sorry.

I probably would have put a pic on the FH thread.

An interesting story copied from Facebook.
' a lot of the work at Clevedon was undertaken by the Bishop brothers who later set up Sheldon pottery in a studio behind the Curzon cinema in Clevedon. Most pots with just a FH mark were made by them and others who worked there whilst William usually signed his'

Five sgraffito bowls made by William Fishley Holland Senior and his wife Gaye Fishley Holland between 1962 and 1968. This must have been near the very end of their potting careers,

Here's an image of a book that I bought years ago and wouldn't part with.

It was published in 1958 and tells the life story of William Fishley Holland, who began potting at his grandfather's pottery in Fremington. It's a fascinating autobiographical account and can still be found.

It is indeed a lovely book. I cannot remember him mentioning his wife or her name once though. Or am I mistaken?
