Re: John Maltby
One of the galleries says that ‘from the mid seventies’ he concentrated on individual pieces. Some of his paper collages are dated relatively recently - 2012 - so not as early as I was expecting

Re: John Maltby
He told me that he did the card/paper/wood things when he was a little short of money to buy clay and also during the winter, as if he had clay at that time it was often unusable, as it froze. He did say that he wasn't terribly keen on them but people seemed to be, which I suspect meant that he got pestered by galleries to make some more recently.

Re: John Maltby
On the Stoneshill/Spike Pottery thread? Looks like Philpot’s Maltby mark that he posted on that thread.

Re: John Maltby
Nice. Very nice! You can see clearly why John Maltby is so popular. As a matter of interest, could you give a date to the little rider?

Re: John Maltby
I have a horse and Knight which Maltby made a few years ago. He’s still making them; I don’t know when he started

Re: John Maltby
The image above was from late 2014 and I would have bought that directly from him earlier that year. He was making more smaller pieces, such as the horse and rider, then and from what he said I would suspect he might have started making them around 2010 or slightly later.

Re: John Maltby
Very sad to say, John Maltby has died. He passed away in hospital last Tuesday, with heart trouble. He had a major heart attack in the mid 1990's that led to his becoming more of a sculptor than a potter. A genuinely great Ceramicist who will be incredibly missed.
It has been a very sad year of the passing of the Greats.
John Maltby 1936-2020. RIP.
The King of them all.

He was a fascinating character and a Lincolnshire lad too. He'll always be remember.

Re: John Maltby
He was the best thing to come out of Cleethorpes for sure!

Re: John Maltby
I won't profess to be that knowledgeable on all things studio pottery but I guess that already well-priced pieces will now start to go exponentially higher. With that in mind my one tip for the future is David Hockney, he's getting on and is a heavy smoker. Stock up on prints, posters etc.
Apologies if its a bit too cynical for christmas day.
Have a good day everyone.
