Could this studio pottery dish be Poh Chap Yeap?
Hi,
Bought dish this hoping it could be Poh Chap Yeap, but either way I like it and was still worth it to me if it's not. (10.5 inches, so quite large)
Thanks,
Potty.

Bad pictures sorry, the design looks a lot better in person.

I think if I had seen it I would have bought it, although I don't know who it is by.
Yeap's mark is incised in the same manner and is shown below: -

Thanks for your input SP , I thought the mark was very close but not the same as his "perfect signature" but looks very close to a few I have seen online, but maybe they are not actually Yeap?

That’s an example, where the signature seems not quite right.
Was hoping Yeap was like me and does not always get his signature looking the same

It was £12 and I thought regardless, I like it and can't see me losing anything on it.

Forgot to mention, It is hand thrown and seems to be made from a very fine stoneware.

Re: Could this studio pottery dish be Poh Chap Yeap?
Yeap's signature wasn't always precise and when he painted his signature as with the teapot sold at "auctionatrium" it was less precise. I had probably glanced at the teapot on that auction site but hadn't taken much notice and, as someone who has seen hundreds of Yeap pots and several teapots, which not many people can say, I wouldn't have bought that teapot.
It could just be because the teapot might have been made c 1970, as stated, and I haven't seen anything as early as that. Yeap had his first exhibition in 1973 and I imagine everything I have seen would have been made in the 10 years following that.
Yeap worked mainly in porcelain but also in stoneware. As far as I can recall all the stoneware pots I have seen have had a painted signature and all the porcelain ones an incised signature. The teapot you pointed out is porcelain with a painted signature.
All the teapots I have seen have been in stoneware with a bamboo handle but a much more refined shape than the green teapot in that auction, especialy the knob on the lid.
Yeap did use a green glaze on occasions but I don't like the look of the glaze on that teapot - it doesn't look good enough.
On all the pieces of Yeap's work I have seen he sought perfection and I have never seen anything by Yeap with such a badly cut base as that teapot has.
Is the teapot a Yeap? I think that it could be but, if so, it is an early example before his skills had been refined and, as such, is a poor example of his work. That along with a damage made it around £150 too expensive - £35 would have been a fair price.

I did once buy a vessel in fine stoneware with a bamboo handle, which probably had a signature like yours. Like you I bought it thinking it was Yeap. It was some time ago, before I had seen as many Yeap's as I have now, but when I made a comparison it wasn't quite right.
I did sell it in my "£10 and under bargain bin" as being by an unknown potter so can't dig it out.
Re: Could this studio pottery dish be Poh Chap Yeap?
Thanks for that SP :)
I did think the base of teapot was quite poorly finished.
The decoration on mine did also seem a bit over the top for Leap, but I have not seen a many examples.
Cheers again :)

Yeap Pottery
I have bought many of Yeap's pottery in the early 1970 when his lovely wife Brita was still alive. The signature looks familiar.

Yeap's tea pots all had bamboo handles (made by his wife). I did know Brita for many years before her tragic early death.

Re: Could this studio pottery dish be Poh Chap Yeap?
Adding 2 more pictures, I think they are a little better quality.
Sigrun, do you happen to have any of Yeap's pottery with a signature more like this that you would be willing to post a picture of please?
Would you guys say the dish itself is "right" for Yeap's early work?
Thanks,
Potty.

Thanks for the link Ed, I had seen it before, but did not realise it was a black and white picture.

It is similar, the colours used look the same, also looks sprayed (or effect), end style quite different, but the bowl looks to be a later one?

Re: Could this studio pottery dish be Poh Chap Yeap?
It looks like it will go down as a" possible", I am hitting a brick wall with my Ian Auld piece , not many people around that are that clued up on his early work , well none that I can find ,the V&A promised to get back within 20 days , but I doubt even they would know Ah! well plug on

Re: Could this studio pottery dish be Poh Chap Yeap?
Depends who they have at the V&A, but I doubt they would have anyone that specialized to give a definitive answer? You maybe able to get an “attributed to” though.

Re: Could this studio pottery dish be Poh Chap Yeap?
I really wouldn't expect a Definite answer, the only person who could have done that is gone , but if proof of an experimental or demonstration or even an apprentice piece would suffice .
