Thanks again Philpot. I think I need to get organised and save the pictures I find with similar glaze and similar shaped pots.

Pinterest is good for that. The glaze is a type of tenmoku one with finger wipe decoration. Both fairly common, but can take on another level when they are in the hands of a master.

A large earthenware bowl from the early 1950s. It only had the Winchcombe Pottery seal.

Its a 70's Winchcombe mark. Sid Tustin retired in 1968,  and stoneware production started in 1964. So between those dates. Its a standard ware soup bowl and would have had a lid. Unfortunately, a lot of these were produced, as the 70's was the time when the Cranks vegetarian restaurants used  exactly this type of Winchcombe ware. Hence they became popular as part of people's lifestyle statement

Hello, this cup seems to have a slight iridescence and a makers mark. Any ideas would be great - thank you :)

It would be interesting to see the whole thing. The glazing looks rather interesting, and that is an older Winchcombe mark. Late 60's, early 70's?

There has been a lot of older Winchcombe pieces on Ebay lately. Wonder where they all came from.
Anyways, away from my musings.
That is a really nice piece. Love the decoration around the waist.

Hoping someone can help me to date this and possibly suggest who might have made it.
Looks pretty new, but I do think it has some age. No personal seal mark, other than the Winchcombe seal and some painted marks.
Many thanks.

Painted marks are likely to be a glaze test.

I thought as much, from what you've told me before.
Surprised there is no personal seal, it looks a good example, in my opinion.
Date wise I'm thinking 70's, am I far out ?

Apparently each apprentice made their own Winchcombe stamp so at some point it'll be possibly to ID and date them from the shape.

Thousands Studio? Wow, that surprises me. Didn't think that they were all that common, shows what little I know.

I meant thousands of jugs and not thousands of potters!!

Well over 90% of the pots produced over the last 60 years has been the production of several different ranges of standard functional wares i.e. the same standard shapes with 3 or 4 different glaze decorations. The person who threw an item is often not going to be the person who glazed and/or fired the piece.

Many of the pots was sold and used by local restaurants and hotels. I remember being there one day and someone from a local restaurant was there with a large lid in his hand. They had broken the bottom of a large lidded casserole and the man had brought along the lid to match the size and pattern. The good news was that he found exactly what he was looking for. However, the old lid was a better fit than the one being sold with it, so he still ended up with an extra lid.

I vaguely recall being told that Ray Finch marked pieces with glaze codes every so often. It was obviously sold on to the public so there’s no reason why it wouldn’t be fully decorated. Waste not want not.

Thought might be useful...  one for Naomi...

winchcombe - Winchcombe Pottery - Page 7 Empty A quick Winchcombe question - two dots?

Post by HelenC June 25th 2021, 9:18 pm

A quick Winchcombe question- I know a single dot bottom left of the Winchcombe stamp indicates the pot was made personally by Ray Finch, but what about two dots top left? Does this have any significance?   Here’s the pot-
