Studio Bowl Copper Glazed
Recently bought off ebay , measures just under 9" diameter, very finely potted ( Tings Beautifully) bronze /gold or copper metallic type glaze , the inside of the bowl dips into another curve , the outside curves up in one piece , a delicate bowl extremely well made , there appears to be a very small makers mark on the base impressed but really hard to make out , any ideas at all ?

Re: Studio Bowl Copper Glazed
Well, gallery Besson replied asking me to send the bowl to them as pictures are not enough ...mmm rather not , It's weird in situations like this when we obviously have to rely on expert opinions ,, trouble is what is an expert ? sometimes it appears to me that programmes like the antiques road show, long established as it is , just gleans its info from long written outdated books and thus the spiral goes downwards ending up in un questioned facts taken as gospel , again I re-iterate this forum has estabilshed itself as a better source of info than most and will grow , we need to be a book all profits accorded

Re: Studio Bowl Copper Glazed
this forum has more experts than the ARS and we don't charge for info

Re: Studio Bowl Copper Glazed
I know exactly what you mean Ed. If attribution cannot be proved then even experts can be wrong. An expert wrongly saying this is not a Lucie Rie could seriously devalue it worse than leaving it unidentified. If you see what I mean.

Re: Studio Bowl Copper Glazed
I must say it is very difficult to judge the glaze of this one on the photos it looks a bit like a painted ikea piece
Re: Studio Bowl Copper Glazed
I knew I had seen it before!

I'll press on with my thesis about experts opinions and values if nobody minds.
I'm assuming that this bowl is by a very good potter like say Lucie Rie. But this cannot be proved.
If an "expert" says it is then bingo..great. Even better if two say so. Sky high price.
But if an "expert" says it isn't, the the price plunges even if they are wrong! Tenner if your lucky.
If a non expert says it is, it depends if they are the owner or not. If the non expert owner says it is then they are a con artist even if they are right! If they are not the owner and enough of them agree (like on this forum) then it might legitimately push up the price As it might persuade a gambler buyer.
If it is presented as 'might be' or an 'unknown' then the value is higher than the definitely not but clearly nowhere near the definitely is because it still has the potential to be a definitely is.
The scale of values goes as follows;
Proven yes. High price
Expert yes.
Unknown. Medium price
Expert no.
Non expert, non owner yes.
Non expert owner yes. Low price.
Proven no. Valueless.
So it's better not to ask an expert if you think they are going to say no. Ok?....................hello?..........

Re: Studio Bowl Copper Glazed
Uuuh??
In my non-expert opinion this isn't Lucie Rie; it's the wrong shape. Hope that didn't devalue it too much

Re: Studio Bowl Copper Glazed
I wasn't saying Ikea especially just that in the picture you can't tell that it isn't a painted modern deco piece therby an expert would need to look at the real thing
Re: Studio Bowl Copper Glazed
I have had enough pots to know it's a quality made item , no doubts at all , but by who , I dunno , finding an expert is more of a problem imo.
