I bought this Delphis large planter No. 74 today and am unable to identify painter. Wondered if anyone on here (Dan?) recognises this. Thanks John

16 Inch Studio Charger
This owl design was used for over 10 years from around 1964 through to the mid 1970s in the Aegean range. However, this is the best one I've come across - a 16 inch studio charger with some very impressive glazes including a grey glaze that I've only seen on a couple of plates.

Hi Dan
Mark 46 - the 1964-66 studio mark. Unfortunately there is no painter's mark so no idea who painted it.

Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part One
Need some help guys. At my wedding in about 4 months time we are having my shape 83's as centre pieces on the tables. I have quite a lot, but I am short a few. So, wondering if someone has any good to great ones (sorry not mid 70's delphis!!!), early delphis, carved ones, nice glazes etc that I could either borrow or purchase for a decent price? I have 24 already, and may have a few more in the loft, but pretty sure I need about another 6 or 8 as we're planning on 3 per table..... Please let me know, getting closer and it's one of the things I still need to sort out!!!!
cheers
Ian

just picked up these two plate's and the first has the paintress mark for Christine Tate 1966-70. shape 4 or 10.5 inch . just a shame about the very small chip.

here is my second one. again its a shape 4 or 10.5 inch and has the paintress mark for either Shirley Campbell 1966-69 or Geraldine o'meara 1966. this one has the impressed mark on the reverse and also has the mottled blue on the back which we have discussed before.

Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part One
to me, I collect the piece's i like (colour and shape) and if i can grab a bargain and move it on i do so. the pieces that i am keeping at the moment seem to be what is in my profile picture and most other pieces i seem to move on. i have to say that my favourite paintress is Jean millership , her normal work comes on a burgundy background with blue's and green's.
at the end of the day i will only buy what i don't mind keeping in my ever growing collection

Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part One
depends on what Poole you are buying Ed, there were a few great Delphis pieces fired in the 70's but early 60's tends to trump even the best of the 70's production

Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part One
a Guy Sydenham Atlantis piece tends to sell for the most money as it was his brain child, if you were buying Aegean then Leslie Elsden would be the choice for the same reason

Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part One
big ed wrote:I see , my problem is trying to find out if I would be paying the right dosh , true, if I really liked a piece then that shouldn't matter I know but for instance some of the atlantis pieces vary widely depending on the decorator etc . I need to learn more I suppose .
Hi Ed
Here's rough rule of thumb for Altantis pieces - from cheapest to dearest
1. Glazed but not carved
2. Carved but not glazed
3. Carved and glazed with a stoneware body
4. Carved and tin glazed on a red clay body
Then you have to overlay the size and shape of the piece (obviously bigger is better), who produced it (Guy Sydenham pieces will always attract a premium) and the quality of the carving (the more intricate the better). So a carved but not glazed piece by Guy will probably be worth more than stoneware carved and glazed piece by someone else.
A couple of other rules of thumb.
1. Pieces without the shape number on the base were produced earlier and are generally better quality
2. Pieces with a glazed base tend to be the earliest and highest quality (they were usually throw by Guy and decorated by Beatrice Bolton)
Hope that helps

Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part One
The early pieces will have no shape number, then hand enscribed pieces with shape numbers, then impressed shape numbers. It is because when the range was originally sold to stores it sold well. After that the stores needed to reorder, so the shape numbers where added to make it possible for them to just reorder shape numbers.
I have seen occasional pieces with unknown marks, like an incised cross decorators mark, which can command a premium.
The best piece of Atlantis I own is probably this Helmet Lamp, which is incredibly carved, every spot of white you can see is individually raised from the main body then glazes. Not the best picture, but you get the idea!
As for what is best, prices vary wildly, even for Studio. I specialise in 8 inch plates and have paid £30 for a sinlge studio plate, rising to £700 for one......
The £700 plate is the one on the left. The one on the right is the confirmed as Tony Morris with a letter of provenance, and cost £500. I do have at least 4 confirmed TM 8" plates, the cheapest was £350, which was a steal as when I agreed the price, it wasnt confirmed as Tony :)
Basically, with Delphis and 60's studio, it is all about the pattern and complexity of glazes.
happy to discuss more, please ask away :)

Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part One
So I was picking up a few cheap plant pots to grow a few herbs in down the boot market this morning and I came across this one. I quite liked the way its textured and glazed in the 'leaf' part combined with the painted part, so I thought that will look nice on the side with a bit of mint in it or something. Curiosty reared its head and I thought to myself, 'before I start using it I'll just look up the marks on the bottom, its Poole so should be easy to see who the painter is right?' So the year mark is easy enough, but I dont seem to be having much luck with the intials. Not being a Poole Collector I dont have the 'bible' so I took a look on the web and just looked through both this and the other Poole thread trying to find a name. I did find a mention of Eileen Wilson but not sure if thats right. So just wondered if one of you would be able to supply a name. It would be kind of fun if there was a Basil or Rosemary in the mix but the initials dont look promising for that.
thanks

Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part One
Ok I only read through this thread recently is it's clearly affecting me, out and about today and saw this. Now I dont normally buy Poole as I dont know enough about the variables as to what is a bargain and whats not, but I found myself with wallet in hand and came home with it. I must admit I did like the colours and texture even before I realised it was Poole I know its Aegian and I can understand the shape number 84, the CK is Carol Kellett nee Cutler I think as seen in an earlier post in this thread, but what is the little scribble mark? decorator? and if so whom?
[img][/img][img][/img]
Think I might need to move this on before I fall into the trap of becoming a Poole collector

Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part One
Looks like Carolyn Wills as the decorator, Carol would of thrown it. Worth £10 to £20 I would say.
