Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part One
I've recently got a box of 30 various Poole plates, all shape 361. Mostly from Delphis range and some from Aegean range. Apologies for posting more than 1 picture and request at once. I've tried to identify the signatures but it proved to be a bit tricky.
I thought this one could be by Angela Wyburgh 1968-73?
No idea on this one though:
Another one, firstly I thought it may be Carol Cutler 69-76 but it should be a dot instead of the line:
The mark on this plate is a bit faint, nice dark red glaze:
Plate from the Aegean series marked CU, I think:
This signature looks little bit like Pamela Bevens or Janet Laird but I suspect is neither:
Similar symmetric decoration here but signature is a bit different:
And here 2 different plates with similar mark:
And yet another signature I couldn't find:
Two lines with dot in the middle, I really like the decoration on this one. Looks like a wall graffiti:
And another one with the same signature, even more interesting. Looks like some kind of 5 legged animal:
Aegean plate, most likely by Ros Sommrfelt:
Another unidentified Aegean plate:
Diana Davis Aegean:
Could this be Shirley Campbel or maybe Geraldine O'Meara?
Could this be made by Angela Wyburgh?
Christine Tate maybe?
I have seen this signature been assigned to Anne Godfrey but I'm not sure:
Any ideas on this one?
Or this one?
And finally Aegean leaf:
Any help would be appreciated, thanks, Simon.

Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part One
don't take my info as gospel, I'm sure the other Poolies will have some input regarding the less obvious monograms

Don't even trust myself so don't worry I'm not taking it as 100% Especially that plate no 15 has 3 different makers but except the numbering I think your identification was right.

Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part One
I think these are just known as "the Guy Sydenham vases with orange spots"
Not in the Poole book. 10 inches high.

Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part One

Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part One
Difficult to say, a couple of rough bits on the foot show white clay so I think it
may have been sprayed.
may have been sprayed.

Here's a 5" Studio dish which has the later mark, and is unsigned.
However, I wonder if it might be a Tony Morris pollared tree.
What do you think?

Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part One
That's a good one.
I have a couple of unsigned studio 49s in my collection that are so good, but I was
reliably informed that TM never did any of the 49 dishes unfortunately.

Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part One
I did wonder. The trees I saw on a dish just looked a similar shape...
I thought my dish was actually an arrow or candle - maybe it is.
Who could have painted it?

Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part One
Well I suppose any of the listed decorators who were working there during 1962-64.
Later on, certain paintresses developed a certain personal style, which is instantly
recogniseable without seeing the mark, eg. Mary Albon/Carol Cutler/Wendy Smith.
In a "factory" environment, signatures were used for production/reject rates, but
maybe the studio wares were more experimental, and less time-constrained, so
maybe signatures were less important.
I was told when Tony Morris was re-employed there, he would maybe do 4 or 5 a
week, but the girls on the production line would churn out those bold "Living
Glaze" broad brush-stroke chargers at about one a minute!
I always wondered, as it was a factory production line (p132 poole book ed1)
if the decorators ever got so see most of their efforts after the final firing, unlike
in a studio pottery, as raw applied glazes look nothing like the finished item.

Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part One
Here are some 5" dishes I've bought recently.
The first two have the Studio TV mark, the second two the later Studio mark, while the bottom one has the blue Poole mark, but no shape number:

Only the bottom one - Carolyn Bartlett.
I guess it is from early 1966, although I've seen it stated she was at Poole from 1962 to 1965.

Those foot rims
Re Cycladelic.
"You can see that the first has a large footring, while the second has no footring.
Does anyone know when the footring was done away with?"
Around the late 60s I guess.
The very early studio/delphis shapes were (mostly) all properly thrown and turned.
The slightly later, various trays and dishes (The spears/eyes/trapeziums/bon bons).
were moulded shapes, much cheaper to produce.
The 49s without the foot rim are in fact modified tea saucers from the tableware ranges.
The 2 handled dish is a cake-plate, I have even had a delphis cereal bowl! All done to
cut production costs by using tableware blanks.

dantheman wrote:we on the Poole Pottery forum did put a date to the footring changeover, I think Gareth will probably remember
We dated the small footrim to large footrim changeover to second half of 1966, although it is likely both overlapped for a short while.
I don't remember dating when the footrim was removed. From my own records it looks to be about 1971.
