Bretby Art Pottery - Henry Tooth & Co. Ltd - Page 2 Empty Bretby Pottery Vase - Can anyone supply any info?

Post by seandux December 8th 2017, 8:52 pm

Hi All - hope someone can help. I found this Bretby Pottery Vase in one of our local auctions in the North West of England but can only find scant information about Bretby. There is no number on the base simply the Bretby impressed stamp which (according to the little info I have found) could mean it is a very early example. It has a simply 'copper' glaze but that looks as if it has been unevenly applied (or maybe with age has faded at uneven rates?). Quite large at 27 cm tall x 18 cm wide at the widest part and weighs in at almost 2 kgs. I'm afraid that's about I can say but if anyone can fill in any more information (date etc) it would be much appreciated. Thanks

The "rising sun" mark was first registered in 1884, but used throughout the
production of the pottery.
They used all sorts of glazes, but I would tend to towards an Oxblood
vase, probably early 20thC. A nice large piece.

I will move it to the Bretby thread eventually.

The type of design would normally nudge it to the between 1905-1920 when this type of glaze was most in fashion. Companies like Ruskin, Pilkington, Bretby, Ault all had ranges. Mid 1920's onwards things change with Art deco's paler colours.

Bretby Art Pottery - Henry Tooth & Co. Ltd - Page 2 Empty Help identifying twin handled vase - Bretby

Post by Nitram July 6th 2018, 4:45 pm

Hello,  grateful for any insights please as to this twin handled vase, passed down through the family.  There are markings on the base as shown in the photos but difficult to make out.  It measures ~22cm high and ~12cm diameter.  Many thanks in advance for taking a look.

It’s usually a pattern number, and the letter at the end might be a size code.

Sorry it was the washed out colour that threw me.
A lot of this pre-war period of Bretby was cold painted over the glaze.
It does flake off and discolour, particularly the matt black they used a lot,
which may have happened here.

Hi All, I have a flying duck-- and it has an imprinted makers mark & england imprinted under it. I have searched for hours and can't find what the mark are. The duck is a very high quality I think compared to others - I thought it maybe Beswick but that mark is mystifying! Help please ;-) Bretby Art Pottery - Henry Tooth & Co. Ltd - Page 2 Img_6211

It would appear to be Bretby, though that specific mark is not shown
in the Bretby book.
May be made for a wholesaler/retailer, like the Denby wall ducks, which
were never marked as Denby.

Hi,
I have got this green glazed Bretby injured dog which has an incised Bretby & sunrise mark with pattern number also incised. Can anyone please advise me as to whether or not this type of mark was typical for the piece? Many thanks.

Never seen the model or the mark. Pattern #1348 was introduced in 1901.

Maybe there wasn't quite enough space on the base to use the standard
impressed stamp, so someone has had a go at incising it instead.

But these were surely mass production pieces of fairly low value? Incising like that would take much more time than a stamp. So it does not really make any economic sense.

I would assume they were in the first trial run of the design. After which they probably made a smaller stamp.

I just picked up this nice vase at an estate sale. Can anyone help me with identifying the maker. It is signed but the marking is faint. It looks like 7-8 characters long and I'm guessing it ends in ARD but I'm not positive. It also has the numbers 1670 and 16. Thanks for any help!

Possibly says ENGLAND, Maybe an obscured rising sun above.
Could be Bretby pottery, they did this metallic finish.

Bretby was my first thought too. I’ve seen a few of their pieces with this glaze and made to look like dented cast iron vessels

Yes it's in the Bretby book. Introduced in 1905, the range is called "Copperette",
These oddly shaped pieces were known as "quaints". The shape No 1670 fits that date also.

A large "Peasant ware" pitcher c1934.
This is the "shiny" version of this design. There is a "matt" example on the previous page.
