Re: Vallauris (South of France)
weird that you should ask,I was just trying to work out that very thing just before going online.
It seems that the flower and foliage are within the glaze but I can feel the roughness of the circular highlights which are a light yellow in colour,as though it was fired twice?
Why do you ask?

Re: Vallauris (South of France)
some pieces seem to be painted and not fired often with mimosa flowers I will try to dig one out and put it up. your cigale looks fired with a spot of paint put on afterwards
Re: Vallauris (South of France)
the inside of the lid is glazed so it was fired, the wings of the cigale seem to have gold leaf or similar applied?

Re: Vallauris (South of France)
these are a couple of pots that have been fired but then decorated with paint I think one is marked menton the other vallauris the second one is also marked M Provence which I am hoping is by marcel Provence a chap who restarted the potteries at Moustier st Marie
Re: Vallauris (South of France)
I was wondering if everything stamped Capron was made by Roger?

Re: Vallauris (South of France)
these stoneware pieces were made in the 70s Capron had a big atelier so he probably only made the original moulds someone called Leduc copied them and sold them cheaper (not signed capron but some unsigned) this caused capron to go broke and he had to sell up including the commercial use of his name so there could be things called capron not by him . that other stamp is interesting I'm looking into it what is it on?
Re: Vallauris (South of France)
it's on a clock & the signature 'peynet' is hand written on the front?

Re: Vallauris (South of France)
Ive just seen that. You must know peynet's lovers Pip put started a thread about them. These are just illustations put on a clock face I would of thought after capron had sold the buisness whats strange is the madoura mark under the 'cercle du soliel ' mark I dont think it can be madoura pottery maybe the madoura shops were selling these . the cercle du soliel mark is a capron design but Ive not come across it before

Re: Vallauris (South of France)
they like calling things liberty on that site I think its L. Berty from st. Jean du Desert not Vallauris
Re: Vallauris (South of France)
I was talking to someone who knew Capron and they told me this was the mark of Caprons boutique also Capron was a great friend of Raymond Peynet who came and worked in his atelier . So my previous assumptions were not to accurate ,you live and learn.dantheman wrote:also any info on this stamp would be appreciated
Re: Vallauris (South of France)
so the boutique would have unknown bods making pottery and Capron's name would be stamped on them? (the pots not the bods)

Re: Vallauris (South of France)
I think they were Capron designs but he had a lot of people working for him

so would one have to buy Capron's early work to get a piece made by him?

Re: Vallauris (South of France)
I guess just about all the pieces that Capron collectors buy were not made by him then...

Capron
Dont you think Dan that it must have been the same for people like Wiinblad who were pretty prolific but had to be commercial at the same time. Picasso at Madoura had people who made the plates etc and he painted them. Damien Hirst has large numbers of staff working on his projects. Successful folks like Capron were involved in so many other design projects that they had to work in that way.
Re: Vallauris (South of France)
I agree Annette but my question was an attempt to ascertain the date line after which it is impossible to buy a piece made by the hand of Capron himself.

Re: Vallauris (South of France)
in the 90s capron was making his own sculptures had a couple of assistants but they were his pieces.Harry davis worked for bernard leach and my friend melinda made a lot of harrys pieces at the crowan pottery I think the important thing is the design not the hand most studio potters have someone throwing their pots. nowadays they are often in china rather than cornwall but thats another story
