Re: Vallauris (South of France)
I'm not a big fan of Vallauris generally however the work of certain artists and studios I do like. These bowls that Paul bought recently I think are fab - a great shape and nice drippy glazes.

Vallauris
Hi there,
Came across this way wacky vase several years ago and couldn't resist! Fat lava glaze with two red and one black triangles in gloss glaze. It's 25.5cm tall. I think the signature is French but haven't a clue as to who made it. Would love to know! Thanks.
Cheers,
Mr.

Re: Vallauris (South of France)
I first saw it some years ago in a house nearby the owners mother bought it in portugal I explained that it was Vallauris yesterday she phoned to say they were moving house and had some 'brocante' to sell so there it was I'll probably only get 20euros for it on a flea market at the present time so may hold on to it for a while (it still has traces of gratin in it )
Re: Vallauris (South of France)
the seller of this bowl has asked his 'Capron expert' friends who assured him it was 1950's Capron, produced when he was working with Picault

Re: Vallauris (South of France)
well there seems to be no Callis mark which you would expect if that was so did Capron start of Picaults designs? it looks to me more like a late picault than an early capron is there much wear or scratches?
Re: Vallauris (South of France)
What does the Callis mark look like please?
The pot was posted to me today so I'll let you know about the condition later this week, the listing stated 'no damage or chips'.
It would be interesting if the recognised Picault designs turned out to be Capron designs wouldn't it?

Re: Vallauris (South of France)
sunshine and wine thats what those young potters were after this is an experimental piece as many were then
Re: Vallauris (South of France)
so the Callis mark appears on Capron's pottery? What time period? and did it appear on Picault's pottery too?

Re: Vallauris (South of France)
callis was set up by Capron ,Picault and Derval by 1949 Picault left and set up his own factory Capron hadn't the money to join him there are some early caprons with the same glaze colours as Picault he was making 50 plates a day on his own at one point, Gilbert Valetine introduced him to slip casting at this point and he started inventing the shapes he would continue to use
Re: Vallauris (South of France)
not many people know about the Callis mark so keep it to yourself ??? oops
Re: Vallauris (South of France)
signed R.C.
Vallauris
slip cast in white stoneware clay and finished in high gloss glaze

Re: Vallauris (South of France)
its true Picault normally put just RP or picault in block capitals vallauris only appears on the stamped pieces whereas Capron usually wrote vallauris
Re: Vallauris (South of France)
I was offered this last month,I think it may be a Louis Giraud piece? It seemed in very good condition for a 1950's plaque though....
