Re: Midwinter Pottery
A very lucky buy not strictly Midwinter , but this piece is handthrown and Tubelined By the late great Jessie Tait clearly marked 1958 as good as it gets in collectors terms .

Re: Midwinter Pottery
Be brave and show us the bottom so that we all know what to look for.
Many years ago, late in the day at Ally Pally, I came across two vases, one tubelined in blue and the other in blue and gold by Jessie. £16 for the two - long gone and no images I'm afraid.

A superb large bowl by Jessie Tait , this is tubelining at its best at least where Jessie is concerned , just beautiful.

Re: Midwinter Pottery
Talk elsewhere in the Forum prompted me to dig out the most boring picture below. It dates from the late 1990s and shows a new development of flats called "Midwinter Court".
When I had last visited some 15 years before the Midwinter Pottery had still been there, open and producing pottery. Before that it had been known as the Newport Pottery where Clarice Cliff wares had come off the production lines in the 1930s.

Re: Midwinter Pottery
An extreme rarity i have only seen one other in mr Jenkins book but in a blue colourway this is the only other i have ever seen in nearly 20 years of exteme collecting, designs are by a young Sir Terence Conran dating from the mid 50's.

Re: Midwinter Pottery
Well, I'd like to say that I found one of the 'funkier' designs but here's a little Midwinter jam pot I found yesterday. Unfortunately, there's a small chip in the lower edge and it's missing it's sister pot and the little metal stand they would both sit in.

" />Two extremely scarce coffee pots on the left Cuban fantasy i have had the pot for over 15 years awaiting for the correct lid, found the lid sitting on the wrong pot on ebay a few weeks ago some things are worth waiting for, on the right is Crossnet , both designed by Jessie Tait on the Fashion shape.

Re: Midwinter Pottery
Red enamel handpainted at the factory you could also buy it with out the red but i dont think it was so popular although presumably cheaper, but then it was the 50's so this would have been the height of fashion.

Re: Midwinter Pottery
So, not Terence Conran or Jessie Tait but will the Marquis of Queensbury do?
A tureen in the Columbine pattern. In person this looks very Scandinavian. I was a bit underwhelmed when I first found it but the more I look at it, the more I love it.
On the back-stamp Queensbury is actually spelled Queensberry.

Re: Midwinter Pottery
I met him recently at the PV of the current Teabowl exhibition at the Japanese Embassy when he introduced himself as David. We had a chat and it was only on the tube on the way home that I realised that it was David Queensbury who I had been talking to. If I had twigged earlier then I would have talk a little about Midwinter.

Re: Midwinter Pottery
I spotted it in a box of other pieces at auction although not as cheap as I would have liked it was extremely reasonable and 6 years ago would have been worth about 5 times more than I paid for it , happy days.
Or may be a special order 16" platter in Magic Moments. another very recent purchase.
