Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part Two
Yeah, it was a nice one - looked like it was made yesterday. I've got several monkey buttons and I tidied up last year whilst packing and 'lost' them. Package about the size of 20 Rothmans. Drove me god-dammed mad for about a month wandering about the house looking in drawers, scared I had thrown them out, sleepless nights, can't be in that box - check anyway - not there. Trying to remember if I had opened this or that box. In the end they were packed away in a box where they should not be. But the joy and relief of finding them yay! Like a lost cat come home on Christmas morning
Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part Two
I did the same with a mermaid head that I bought when visiting Guy's studio.
I know it was placed inside a pot for safe keeping but which pot?

Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part Two
Re Naomi's post above.
A decent 49 by Jean Millership, but £20 in that condition?
The problem with the "orange peel" glazes, is that they are pourous.
A lot of these dishes seemed to end up as plant saucers, and the dirty water soaks
straight though into the body, emerging under the glaze underneath.
I'e often picked them up with a hard ring of limescale on the top also, easily removed.
Immersing in thin bleach for a few days, usually, but not always, gets rid of this staining.

Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part Two
Yes, far too expensive. They’d be lucky to sell it for half that price

DD - Why use a lovely ashtray as a plant saucer?
N - Took at least two to bid that price. Perhaps see one a year on the market?

Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part Two
My reply was to denbydump regarding the pin dish

Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part Two
That is really nice - what is the theme? - the little head reminds me of GS mermaid
Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part Two
Its an interpretation of the Medlar tree and stone wall in Guy Sydenhams back garden on Portland. With Tony's 'eye' motif and one of Guys mermaid heads. Have a look at the actual tree on the Poole images website.

Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part Two
I have only seen one Medlar tree in my whole life and it was in Guy's garden. Are they rare?

Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part Two
Yes, fairly rare. They're not found in the wild in the UK, as far as I know. I can only remember seeing 4. One is 5 miles down the road. I planted one in our last garden. And I've seen a couple in National Garden Scheme Gardens.

The picture of the tree in question is on the 'Tony Morris home studio' page.
Therei is a road near me called Medlar avenue/road though I don't know if there is a medlar tree along it.
